Pain Stimulator
Pain related to spinal pathologies is most frequently felt at the back and neck region. Most of the time the nature of the pain is mild but in some circumstances it can be very serious or come up as a result of previous unsuccesfull spinal sugeries.
There can be pain without any underlying pathology.
Most of the time pain originated from back or neck region is caused by muscle spasms, degenerative changes or intervertebral disc herniations. It can manifest during daily activities or can show progression during psyhologically challenging time periods. Patients with a sedantery life style who do not regulary exercise or works in non-ergonomic conditions are good candidates for pain stimulator.
Interventional Treatments
If the long lasting pain related with back or neck do not respond to physiotherapy or there is not a surgery requiring pathology underlying pain; interventional pain treatment options are considered. Facet joint degeneration which do not cause nerve damage besides pain can benefit steroid injections to the epidural space. Radio frequency ablation treatment can also be as effective as epidural steroid injections under these conditions. The main patient population constitutes of patients whom had previous failed back or neck surgeries. The main pain source is the dural adhesions as a result of previous surgeries. These patients have recurrent spinal surgeries and increased adhesions and iatrogenic instability causes more pain at the end.
Spinal Cord Stimulation
Various treatment modalities such as physiotheraphy, pain medications and epidural steroid injections which have mentioned above can fail in pain control for some patient population. Most convenient treatment modality for these patients is spinal cord stimulation. An epidural electrode is placed around the dura surrounding the spinal cord and it’s linked to a generator. Stimulation originated from the generator is transferred to the spinal cord and followingly to the brain and the perception of pain for the patient is altered. In this treatment modality; the patients can change the stimulator setups and benefit more.
